It’s funny how trauma can change us and we actually become better than what we were before, however we may at times wish we were still that person before the trauma. Karen Unrue an inspiring author and mental health advocate and of course a Basicozbizinfo Star and this update’s winner tweeted an amazing video of this very thing that inspired me. Karen talks about how you never really recover from trauma but when you reach what you as a human becoming not just being, the view is so much better. Remembering who we are is very important, however there are times when we need to fight for who we are. In one of my Weekend Empathy Moment Tweets I signed a petition for Amnesty International to hold Myanmar Generals to account for assisting the genocide of the Rohingya people. Genocide is the systematic killing of all the people from a national, ethnic, or religious group, or an attempt to do this, this is where we have to fight for who we are, simply because our very existence disrupts the vested interest of another, and there is no debate or a win win solution, just a final solution in their mind. Which of course as I have talked about many times is in itself a lack of empathy. You can check out my tweet here .
A really informative video has been added to EMPATHY TV this update from Russell Brand interviewing Deeyah Khan about what creates extremists, from what I got from the video was that when people lack essential human needs in their life they will be attracted to an ideology of extremism and leave their old self behind in order to belong to somebody who simply fills their need. One could argue that in Western Society this need is already filled, however from my experience being an Australian Westerner(you could say) is that the political narrative from western democratic societies is that we say one thing but on close inspection we do another. Nonetheless these are good examples of why its important to remember who we are and accept that sometimes we may need to stand up and fight for it.
