Are they exhausting us? The working poor delirium.

Quote: It is our best work that God wants, not the dregs of our exhaustion. I think he must prefer quality to quantity.

George MacDonald

Do you get the feeling of mental exhaustion or being used? Well, you should, because most likely you are. On the entrance to Auschwitz, was a steel sign “Work sets you free” as the Jews entered, they entered in a state of delirium.

Slavery and exploitation are one of the most common crimes in the world and always been sadly. However, is this happening in our modern western culture? If you’re like me and have been a worker and taxpayer for some time, for example a Gen X, you may have noticed a lot of extra challenges have appeared before us than our previous generations.

A lot of this is due to the misperception of wealth obtainment, that if you don’t work, your lazy, a lot of psychology terms are thrown around such as demotivation, not following your dreams, do what you love to succeed.

The reality is that not all of us do what we love but learn to love what we do in order reach our goals, if that isn’t stressful enough, we also pay for our principal place of residence, or some would call it a home at a level that is unprecedented.

Without sliding too much off topic , I have quite deliberately over the years chosen not to invest in property for the very simple reason, I don’t invest in something I don’t trust, just the other day I went to an Ezy mart and went to buy a snickers bar, I decided not to buy it, it looked funny to me the wrapping looked worn and faded, as it had been sitting in the sun for ages, as it turns out it was, the used by date was about 4 months ago.

Property is no different, if the price isn’t right and doesn’t suit your budget or means or the place looks dodgy, and you can’t work with it……. don’t buy it, just like the snickers bar. A purchase is a purchase.

I’m so glad for the choices I have made that I didn’t invest in property but instead saved for retirement and rainy days. Its always good to have cash as your asset, especially in the digital age as your investment value is easily tracked, proven and the govt has a guarantee on it, you will always need income. I learnt this from business studies, however when I speak to execs they always shout property, must have property, I shrug my shoulders, property like anything else goes up and down in value and of course the debt that comes with paying for it, I shudder to think the debt I would be in if I surrendered my position, having said that though, that in itself didn’t come without sacrifices.

What I have observed over the years is the rise of capitalist tax incentives that only support corporations and a higher income bracket, a classic example in Australia would be negative gearing, the whole purpose of NG is to genuinely assist landlords so they can keep land lording and being real businesspeople, not as a tax break investment, as a result of NG being used as a tax break, we have whole heap of investment property owners who aren’t real businesspeople with business and people knowledge and empty properties.

As I work in Brisbane city and walk along the main streets and the rise in homeless people amongst the CBD main streets has risen dramatically over the years, I remember as a kid visiting Brisbane regularly and I can’t remember ever seeing homeless people in the eighties or nineties. As a result of this we are working harder than ever, the only positive is we have the tech to deal with it, AI will prove to be very interesting.

It’s time we started rewarding people who are willing to help communities grow, solve community problems in the form of business and growth grants and payments for individuals not just tax breaks for those who clearly don’t need it, but politicians need donations. What we are seeing today is an ideology of people who are not entrepreneurial in any way but are simply looking for a quick financial fix and go around pretending that they have worked so hard and somehow a business genius.

Having a working poor population who is working their ass off and can’t pay for the basics such as rent, food and utilities is called SLAVERY. Slaves of course suffer from malnutrition, dehydration and of course create great and amazing things from road networks, the White House in Washington and the great pyramids of Egypt.

Working poor or Slavery is what is happening today, right now, we are dehydrating ourselves with slow wage growth not keeping up with cost of living and living in a home. In this dehydration comes our delirium, we need to hydrate ourselves, and demand a better future that embraces the new technology and rewards people who make the effort for our community and with the same hand help the most vulnerable. Our delirium must end, for it is in our delirium when the predator strikes.

Did you know that you have a higher power?

Quote: No one has proof that I know of, that a higher power exists, yet a major portion of the world believes in it and relies on it in faith in trust, in what that is. Where is the science in that? And yet you have incredible belief in that.

Sandra Bullock

What is our higher power? Good question, when we think of a higher power we tend to believe in a power higher than ourselves, I’m inclined to believe that our higher power is when we choose to focus on what’s happening and do what’s needed as opposed to what is it that I am feeling.

Feelings are fine and it’s important to acknowledge them, however at the end of the day it’s important to focus on what we want to achieve and what are the long term benefits of that not only for ourselves but others.

When we enter a world of feelings only we then enter a world of tribalism, where it is more important to ask who is your tribe and how does that tribe make me feel as opposed to what they stand for, for example a westerner may find a half naked Amazonian or African tribe confronting but they may offer solutions to agriculture and climate change and this is where we need to look past our feelings.

Politics can be very tribal and judgemental and it’s important to realise that all of the issues we are facing a more than a feeling and we have higher power within ourselves, some examples where people have looked past feeling and moved forward with great solutions would be the great green wall of Africa and hemp and other natural resources replacing plastics, so many solutions but so little discussion on them in mainstream media.

I think now more than ever we need to start looking at ideas that build a community for everyone and match the need not only the want. Remember there is not enough room in the universe for all of our thoughts and ideas.

Respect Boundaries and the empathy we deserve.

Do you find that we are losing more and more of boundaries or autonomy? Covid hasn’t exactly helped the situation, but as people become more push & shove in their everyday life we lose what Aretha Franklin sang for RESPECT. Aretha was mainly reffering to respect for women, now I find the song is needed as respect for everybody.

People are definitely being used, I justify this by observing how we are continuously being given instruction. Unemployment is at its lowest, so this must mean you should be employed, be brilliant at your job, companies are working very hard to keep you so you should be GRATEFUL!

Sadly this perception doesn’t reflect reality, I have always found in my twenty years or so working in corporations, people who use people are not innovative people, thats why they use people, there only talent is manipulating others.

As a result we miss out on innovating ideas that help all of us prosper instead of just running to the starting gun of leftover 20th century corporate culture, making people feel guilty instead of empowered.

Look at the old rich! How did they become rich? Bet you anything they would have USED people in order to get there, same in politics as well, I don’t belive I need to give any examples regarding politics, the 6’oclock news gives plenty.

We need to fight for a sustainable economy for all us which I talked about in my last blog, however how we fight this by coming up with great ideas that respect people’s boundaries and allow their autonomy and not mess with their minds but allow their creative juices to flow and using the power of empathy, after all thats where all the best ideas come from.

In closing, good examples of respecting boundaries, is understanding that your industry isn’t the only industry, respect the fact that Indigenous people had the land first and if they want to use it for tourism(billion dollar industry) or for sacred reasons etc, they can, just because it doesn’t suit your mining interest, respect boundaries.

Another example is protecting our Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. The Great barrier reef is the largest living organism on earth, key word being living, yes tourism is important but so is the right to exist. Nature has just as much right to be here as humans do and again this boundary needs to be respected and if not respected will be fought for and hard.

Since last blog I have tweeted about Climate Change and petitions shouting for equality and social justice.

Sustainability and Protection

Quote: Protecting our environment and natural resources is necessary for both our planet and our economy. Sharice Davids

A sad reality is if we are to make our environment and economy sustainable, we will have to protect it. Since last update there have been some great examples in the Empathy Tweets of how we can protect our environment and economy by being more sustainable in our thinking.

The Climate council has put forward an economic proposal that can bring Australia into a trillon dollar economy which we can use to build our communities.

Sounds great don’t it, so why don’t we get in and do it, because it doesn’t suit the interest of old money and some people don’t have the empathy to look past their own nose, they have the pathetic romance of looking after themselves and putting themselves forward and some look at this as an heroic attribute, its simply selfishness disguised as an affirmation.

Control is the key, renewable energy and sustainable solutions put people in control, think about it without a power grid how can you control people or business unless you break into someone’s home and damage their power source and with having more than one power source brings competition into the marketplace.

In order for things such as renewable energy, sustainable devlopment to happen, we need to fix our political system first, so it is for the people’s needs. Currently govt is a cash grab for the highest bidder taking advantage of an old system that needs modernising.

If we can modernise our democrarcy systems this is a great way to protect our future and make it more sustainable, not only this but by empowering a marketplace that is sustainable thus creating a sustainable economy this in itself can help mould our govt democratic system.

Since last blog I have tweeted about Climate Change and petitions shouting for equality and social justice.

Do you follow the crowd?

Quote: “Never follow the crowd.”

Bernard Baruch

Sooner or later all of us make the choice to use our own wings, when is that time that we decide to make that move and not follow the crowd.

More importantly what prompts us to make that choice, my answer is nature itself, its important for nature to diversify itself, you will find that every living thing has its own uniqueness, there are similarities of course however no being is exactly the same, this is our own cue.

Having said that when it comes to our own values this would also be true, they can have their own uniqueness, our own version of empathy. Looking after the vulnerable is one of the most empathic activities one can do. The disabled are certainly vulnerable and require our empathy and care not our scrutiny, there is an active petition on change.org asking to stop NDIS from rolling out Independent Assessments Click here

Basic necessities such as clean air and water are given, however reading from Global Citizen’s website – “An estimated 844 million people around the world don’t have easy access to clean water. Roughly 80% of the world’s extreme poor live in rural areas where they often rely on the surrounding land for subsistence farming. Air pollution, meanwhile, disproportionately affects people in poverty.” Basic necessities aren’t so easy to come across for everybody, largely due to population growth and poor quick profit management, glad to see that Global citizen isn’t following the crowd, see their amazing work, click here

To present an example of somebody not following the crowd and exercising bravery and courage, have a read of 21-year-old photographer and refugee Yousif Al Shewaili’s blog – My Own Words: My Life in Moria Refugee Camp Click here

Say Something

“Preach not because you have to say something, but because you have something to say.” By Richard Whately

Question! When does our fear of safety become more important than our rights? Or perhaps a better question is WHY do we need to sacrifice our rights for fear?

Closed secret trials. Raids on journalists. Whistle-blowers and their lawyers facing prison time.

Are these the issues we like to see from our news sources all because of this fear of the unknown? Another question! Who is really afraid, us the people with fears of being attacked OR old power(traditional media, monarch states, states with outdated democratic models etc) being overtaken by new power(social media, instant communication between people & govt, progressive & inclusive groups etc)?

In Australia we have had a fear driven politics filled with drama and high alerts, be it China, Terrorism or the Economy and this kind of rhetoric has lead to proposals that cause an erosion of rights.

It doesn’t matter what crisis you face or choose to use as an example but you will find that fear is only used as a natural alert for yourself after that you move into fight or flight and start thinking of ways to resolve what you are facing. For example, when Australia had the bushfire tragedy at the beginning of the year due to Climate Change, immediately people were talking about solutions to prevent this from happening again, even a call on fire authorities to investigate personal fireproof bunkers. The CSIRO investigated six cases in Victoria where people survived in accredited purpose-built bunkers.

So why aren’t we talking about solutions that protect our rights but protect us as well instead of just proposing more heavy legislation. Click here

Below is a couple of examples of key areas where Australians need to say something and be heard.

Destruction of culturally significant indigenous sites- Click here

Changed minds equals a changed economy.

New Economy

Two extraordinary people have captured my attention since last update, the amazing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on defence of The Green New Deal and of course Julian Assange who despite his political arrest, his fight continues.

I will never forget Collateral Murder(click here), this was an undeniable turning point in our western culture, we could see first hand the crimes our western culture commits and of course like most adults we don’t assume there is one great power except that of the people, this is Julian’s or Wikileaks message , plain and simple. Nobody is above the law or above fair criticism and there is no such thing as classified information, keeping secrets from humans is generally impossible.

Most opponents of progressive thinking or general common sense with empathy and without issue always use the economy or money as an excuse to defend lack of action, no greater example of this than with climate change, it’s in our economic interest to transition to renewables so our economy can prosper with smarter technology that creates opportunities within itself as opposed to simply holding onto old money ways because that’s the comfort zone your used to, as an adult you must accept things change with out political tantrum and if it’s the right path, you walk it.

Human Rights and Human Solutions

human-rights-900x600

Since last update, I have been using the Human rights hashtag quite frequently for everything from disability rights, a royal commission into the mistreatment and neglect of the disabled care centres in Australia to the recent arrest of Chelsea Manning for refusing to give evidence regarding wikileaks in a unopen arena.

Greed and ignorance always leads to corruption and ill-treatment of the vulnerable, however there is a good saying “You don’t win by fighting those you hate but by saving those you care about”. A good example is how Microsoft is using AI(artificial Intelligence) to map forests, all their vegetation, insects, animals in order to preserve the forest and accurately record its DNA structure if you like, this will be helpful when Climate Change kicks in, you can see the video on Empathy TV, another good example is by sharing the good news as well as the bad on your social media account, everything from Amnesty Petitions through to climate change events or emailing your an MP on your objection to oil drilling in an ecosystem such as the Great Australian Bight.

Truth and Empathy – Do we really need to choose?

Invasion Day

Recently I attended my first Invasion Day Rally, this a rally protesting against the colonisation of Australia and how sovereignty was never ceded. Without absence of a treaty it is improper to celebrate Australia Day on the day the first fleet arrived. It was an emotional day, especially hearing the heartbreaking experiences of discrimination from indigenous people such as the mother of Grant Ross who was shot 5 times unarmed https://twitter.com/Ljb2Liam/status/1089016149293985792

However nothing quite surprised me more than a couple of days later when I came across as to what can only be described in my firm opinion as vitriolic. Twitter was trending a panel discussion aired by Studio 10 where a conflict occurred between Yumi Styles and Kerrie Anne Kennerley. When I viewed the video, to summarise, Kerrie Anne was making a comment that the people who marched on Invasion Day have not gone out to the bush to see first hand the abuse that indigenous communities suffer and that somehow these people who marched are ignorant in some way or possibly even lazy. I am completely at a loss as to how whether or not protest marchers have been bush or have witnessed atrocities first hand is relevant to the issue, if somebody has enough empathy to take time out of their day to walk a good few kilometers in the hot boiling sun after they have been working very hard all week for an issue that I would imagine is close to the heart of every Australian, I’m sure their heart is in the right place, but most of all, why do we have to choose between TRUTH(Sovereignty was never ceded) and EMPATHY(Objecting to the abuse that indigenous communities suffer) as I tweeted, can’t we do both https://twitter.com/Ljb2Liam/status/1090093716675584002 I for one will not be choosing, I will be doing both and walking with progress as opposed to generating a false argument that borders on stupidity, presumably for ratings, especially on an issue as sensitive as this where progressive minds who can empathize are needed, not certain members of our society who have time to watch morning talk shows and shout socially lazy comments from armchair to TV. I tweeted a response to Yumi and Nova Peris who like me was also disgusted click here https://twitter.com/Ljb2Liam/status/1089776895644712960

Are you ready to give this season?

Giving is the highest form of empathy, an activity that is one on one, it’s all about the receiver but also the giver. Christmas can get busy fast and in a ridiculous way, for me as my birthday is exactly 4 weeks before Christmas its get crazy with parties, family get togethers and so on and of course one needs to find time out of our daily grind to do the annual Christmas shopping. I was going through my Weekend Empathy Moments on twitter looking for inspiration for the last blog of 2018 and I came across an interview with Russell Brand and Marianne Williamson, Marianne was talking about depression and how it shouldn’t be dealt with in a drug taking way but in a more real and natural way and don’t expect immediate results, what captured my interest in that interview was when she said that its important to show up for people and do not squander one hour in your pain, that made a lot of sense to me. I am at my most productive when I take the time to think about how I can help someone else and this gives your life a purpose as opposed to an existence.

Tis the season of giving, share or donate charity links is a good way to give, I do this regularly and I find it’s a good way to promote empathy and opportunity at the same time, here some good examples since last update, Gulzar Duishenova is a Kyrgyzstani woman with a disability, who lives in a society where persons with disabilities face daily discrimination. One of these forms of discrimination is accessibility; from going to the doctor, to getting on public transport(Click here)  another example is after seven years of war, Syrians are struggling to survive. Over 5.5 million men, women and children have fled to neighbouring countries, where they live in extreme poverty, click here  Please give and be merry. Give a little bit »
